Beginner dance class with live DJ and early 2000’s pop and house bangers in Northcote

WHAT IS IT?

A dance night in Northcote. You learn a beginner choreographed routine from scratch. No prior experience, no prior class needed. Then a stretch of free dance with a live DJ on for the whole evening. You're home before eight.

The music is early 2000s pop and house. The songs that were playing when deciding which going-out top was the biggest decision in your life. The songs your body remembers and you can’t help but scream-sing to.

Come back out to play.

Phone-free, in person, and nothing like a wellness session.

Walk in flat. Leave elevated. Not fixed, not transformed, just back.

WHY IT WORKS

A 2024 meta-analysis found that dance matched or outperformed other forms of exercise for improving mood and emotional wellbeing.

Familiar music shortcuts you into a memory of yourself, physically. Your body goes somewhere before your brain catches up. Learning choreography occupies the thinking brain so it stops running the thought loop, the to-do list, the inner monologue. And doing it in a room with other people amplifies it.

It's not magic. It's just that your nervous system responds to music, movement and other people in ways that not many other things do.

We have designed this event with exactly that in mind.

FROM OUR FOUNDER

I am a bad dancer.

Not "oh I'm terrible, haha" bad. Actually bad. I lose the beat. I'm a half-count behind. I move my arms with the confidence of someone who has no idea what they're doing with their arms.

But it is one of my favourite things to do.

It wasn’t always, I used to be incredibly self-conscious and would need to be dragged onto a dance floor. But at some point I thought, f**k it and started to let go a little, care a little less and loosen up.

It gives my brain something to do other than run my to-do list. I love it when the music is loud enough that I stop caring what I look like. And somewhere around the fifteen minute mark I can feel the stress, tightness, worry I had been carrying dissolve. The post-dance high is real.

That’s why I’m so excited for this event. You don't need to be a dancer. I’m certainly not. You just need to be ready for a really good dance to some old-school bangers.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Here's what the evening looks like.

You arrive from 6.30pm. Fourty-five minutes learning a beginner choreographed routine with Emily Zumstein, from scratch, no experience, no prior class needed. Then thirty minutes of free dance with our DJ Esin throughout. You're home before eight.

Here's what won't happen. Nobody will ask you to introduce yourself. Nobody will ask you to share one word for how you're feeling. There is no partner work. There are no trust exercises. You will not be asked to make eye contact with a stranger for an uncomfortable amount of time. There's no circle at the end where you talk about what came up for you.

Bonus for the Mums: We are babes in arms friendly!

BRING YOUR BESTIE FOR FREE

One ticket is for two people.

Dance is better shared with friends!

That’s why every ticket gets to bring-a-friend for free. The friend you've been meaning to catch up with, the one you used to go dancing with, the one who’s up for anything, or the one who is in need of a little fun and a good dance.

Add her name at checkout or after you’ve bought and she's on the ticket.

WORDS FROM OUR COMMUNITY

SHE’S BACK.

“It had been a long time since I’d truly taken a moment for myself, and it was exactly what my body and mind needed.”

“I left feeling lighter, calmer and genuinely recharged. I can’t wait to do it again.”
